Health Benefits of Ballroom Dancing
Ballroom dancing is that perfect combination of physical activity, social interaction, and mental stimulation, and it can bring so much to your life. It’s a great workout; has documented physical and mental health benefits; can enhance your social life and self-confidence; reduces stress and depression; promotes relaxation; is a wonderful outlet for self-expression and creativity; and it’s fun! With all these reasons to start dancing – we challenge you to find a good reason not to.
Ballroom dance is a dance type where oneself grab a partner and learn routines from some categories. Ballroom dance has been around since late 1800’s, early 1900’s. Its all started with Cha Cha and Waltz. It is a very intense sport. Since then it has expanded from international to american. For example, it started with Cha-Cha and Waltz; Now there’s Jive, Swing, Rumba, Lindy Hop, Samba, Tango, Quickstep, Paso Doble, and so many more. Also they are enjoyable for all ages. This helps in so many ways. It contains health benefits, physically and mentally. With all the physical and mental health benefits, Ballroom should be the most suggested sport for all ages. Studies have found that people who do physical activity, for example ballroom dance, reduces depression than those who don’t. Physical activity can help with many mental diseases. Depression rates are going higher every day. In 2015 it was 6.7%. (ADAA) People who suffer from depression can usually caused because they aren’t loved or they never feel included. Physical activity helps them feel appreciated and important; Whether that’s on a ballroom dance team or a zumba group or even walking around with neighbors. Unfortunately, kids are more likely to be depressed because kids will be mean. Physical activity can help the kids not be depressed. Kids percentage of depression is about 2%. (Son) This may seem like a little but if it keeps going in a couple of years in maybe 10% or even more. It starts with their self-esteem. Self-esteem plays a huge role in a kid’s growing up life. Dance is a great physical activity. It helps them learn how to work as a team and improves their communication skills. Others will say hey kid do this right or hey kid don’t do it wrong again. Negative things or comments are very powerful. Positive things or comments go over any negative comment. In any sport being Ballroom dance, football, soccer, or whatever sport they pursue. They will hear great job, or that was amazing, or even that was greatly amazing let’s see it again. Positivity is always recommended for kids. Anxiety is a problem in teenagers. Anxiety can be caused by multiple things.
By practicing dancing, you can look younger then your age by slowing down the aging process. It a fact that by practicing dance, the muscle exertion and breathing rates in just one dance is similar to those who practice cycling, swimming and Olympic 800 meter runner. People who practice dancing seldom having problems with joints and bones because dancing helps strengthen bones and dance also helps in treatments of osteoporosis, which is a major concern for female. Arthritis can be preventing by dancing, by make the joints lubricated. People who having problems with their weight can practice dancing as dancing can burn more calories and increase the circulation of blood. Dancing can burn 5 to 10 calories per minutes as estimated (Barbara Craddock. 2006, Dec 04). Ballroom, Latin, Mambo and Salsa dancer can burn 264 calories per hour base on 100 lb. Fast, Ballet, and Twist dancer could burn 288 calories per hour base on 100 lb. Slow, Waltz, Foxtrot dancer could burn up to 144 calories per hour base on 100 lb. people with diabetics can lower the sugar lever by practicing dance and dance is also good for lipid control which raises the HDL (good cholesterol) and lower the LDL (bad cholesterol). Dancing can help improve memory by memories each and every steps that has in each dances. People that practice dance will feel happy and less stress. Dancing can enhance heart and lungs condition, increased muscular strength, endurance and motor fitness. People with weigh problem will see the different in their weight after awhile of practicing dancing, agility and flexibility will be increased. By dance, a person can improve their social skills by dance in a group of people with different ages, genders and status (Sarah Snyder, Jan 25, 2010).
Given these points, it’s easy to get caught up in the fun of ballroom dance and forget how beneficial it is to your overall health. Since more people are being drawn to dance, the knowledge we have about its benefits is becoming more widely known. Increased evidence shows that dancing is one of the few overall workouts—exercising your mind, body, and soul.
