Performance Appraisals

Use the concepts outlined in Chapter 11 of the Compensation textbook as a guide for completing this writing assignment. In particular, the balanced scorecard approach will be used to analyze a current performance rating process and to suggest possible improvements in the policy, processes, and forms. You are encouraged to familiarize yourself with the balanced scorecard approach by re-reading through each of the five strategies:
Strategy 1: Improve Appraisal Formats
Strategy 2: Select the Right Raters
Strategy 3: Understand How Raters Process Information
Strategy 4: Training Raters to Rate More Accurately
Strategy 5: Improving Rater Motivation and Opportunity to Rate More Accurately
Strategy 1: Improve Appraisal Formats. Questions to answer in the individual paper for this strategy include:
Identify the performance appraisal policy that applies to the position.
In the paper, provide a brief overview and evaluation of the written performance appraisal policy. Is it adequate? If so, why? If not, why not?
If none exists, draft a plausible performance appraisal policy in summary form and state why it would be of good use in the identified organization.
Identify the type of format of the performance appraisal that is used to appraise the position, based on the formats discussed in Chapter 11 of Newman, Gerhart, & Milkovich (2020).
Ranking and Rating Systems (pages 389 - 391)
Straight ranking
Alternation ranking
Paired-comparison ranking
Behavioral Systems (pages 391- 392)
Switching to behaviors as anchors . . . (BARS) seems to be the most common format using behaviors as anchors (page 391).
Goal-Oriented Systems (pages 393 - 395)
Management by Objectives (MBO)
In the paper, evaluate the type of format used for appraising the position using the five dimensions that make for a good appraisal format, as identified in the textbook on pages 395-397:
Employee development potential (amount of feedback about performance that the format offers)
Administrative ease
Personnel research potential
Cost
Validity
Identify one or more areas for improvement. Explain what changes would be made and why.
Include a copy of the actual performance appraisal form as an Appendix in the paper. If none exits, locate an example that would work well, and explain why it would work well. Include as an Appendix in the paper.
Strategy 2: Select the Right Raters. Questions to answer in the individual paper for this strategy include:
Identify the raters (by position title) in the appraisal process of the position. Explain why these raters are used and other types of raters are not.
Evaluate the use of raters in the appraisal process. Are they the right raters? If yes, explain. If no, explain.
Strategy 3: Understand How Raters Process Information. Questions to answer in the individual paper for this strategy include:
Identify at least four (4) common errors that can occur in the appraisal process.
What errors are more likely to occur with the identified appraisal process? Why?
What has been your experience with any one or more of the common errors in the current appraisal process as the rater (if applicable)? As the ratee (as applicable)?
Strategy 4: Training Raters to Rate More Accurately and Strategy 5: Improving Rater Motivation and Opportunity to Rate More Accurately. Questions to answer in the individual paper for these strategies include:
Name and describe the three distinct categories of rater training programs.
Provide one specific example for how trainer training might occur for each of the three distinct categories of rater training programs.
Identify how rater training occurs in your present organization or an organization for which you are familiar (such as a past employer).
Provide at least one suggestion for how rater training could be improved in your organization or for an organization with which you are familiar (such as a past employer).
In addition, locate and read a minimum of two (2) other articles in peer-reviewed or professional journals that support the assignment selected so that additional depth of understanding of the topic may be included in the research paper. Include in the in-text citations of the paper, course textbook support as well (in addition to outside references). Articles may be retrieved through IWU’s Off-Campus Library Services (OCLS) site.
Navigate to the OCLS homepage; select Business, under Article Databases. The best databases to use ABI/INFORM Complete or Business Source Complete. Be sure to limit to Full Text and Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals on the left hand side after getting a list of articles on your searched topic.
You may want to contact OCLS and request a Personalized Search Plan once you have identified your topic.
Write a four-five page paper. The individual paper is to be written in APA format with proper mechanics (i.e., sentence structure, word choice, grammar, punctuation, and spelling). A title page, reference page, and appendices are required in addition to the four-five pages. The paper should be written as a professional report with APA headings for each of the strategy sections, as identified above. Do not include the questions in the paper.

My HR department never responded to my request for obtaining a performance review system sheet. One will need to be created. There needs to be two Appendices, so I stated I needed 2 charts as I didn't see an option for how to add those.
