Automation and the Challenge With Human Factors

Automation is so reliable that pilots don’t realize that habits have become degraded. Multiple studies have shown that many pilots poorly understand aspects of auto flight modes. Inadequacies have been found in many areas of pilot training with the lack of in-depth training needed for the increasingly complex technology in automation in the flight decks, but given the fundamental understanding and on their own through on the job training gaining more knowledge with time. Airlines are providing only the FAA mandated training. No matter how sophisticated or complex the aircraft flight management system and computers are, the final computation for accuracy must be done with the pilot’s personal computer, their brains. With the human brain desiring active engagement for challenging and stimulating tasks monitoring automation can be compared to watching paint dry or grass grow. Airline pilots not only need the skill, but the confidence in realistic skills to quickly intervene when automation goes wrong.
Statement of the problem
Advancement and design of airliner flight decks are designed for the purpose of reducing workload for the pilots of the commercial airliner. Automation has allowed increase aviation safety around the world. The issue with automation may produce situations where pilots may not understand the information and lose situational awareness. Automation is a great advancement but human factors cause scenarios where the pilots don’t understand the information being provided, do not trust the information, or become too reliable on this technology.
A common saying in the flight deck is What is it doing now? What brings the pilots to say these words will be looked at throughout this research to include not understanding the automation, not trusting the information, training on automation, and becoming too reliable with it. The research will look into automation, how it has improved safety and how human factors have influenced automation both positive and negatively.
