Creating an Alternative & Motivating Performance Appraisal

Description: After carefully reading an outside case (provided by the instructor or selected by students and approved by the instructor), students will be required to review the case and develop an alternative Appraisal Form (and an entirely new evaluation system if they choose). Cases will be broken into several parts, all which will revolve around the “What, Why and How?” of the case (e.g. the paper will develop the what (position statement), why (the argument) and how (the student’s action plan and proposed Appraisal Form/System). Please read the rubric carefully! All papers must contain a literature review section!

Embedded within the “what, why and how?” aspects of the paper will be:

A detailed overview of the “role of human capital” in the case, specifically addressing the shortfalls of the current system;
A detailed overview of the role of “motivation” (e.g. current policies and procedures helping or hindering employee motivation) and details on why the current system may not motivate employees;
A proposed NEW performance appraisal form (or a completely new form and accompanying motivational system); and
A professional and articulate tone throughout. (CLO: 1, 2 & 3)

-Case review begins with a professionally constructed literature review of what a performance appraisal process is and how it can be valuable in providing guidance for organizations. Literature review effectively, professionally and efficiently addresses: 1) Ethical Dilemmas; 2) Internal/External Influences; 3) Stakeholders; 4) Managerial Roles; and 5) Bias.

-Case review accurately and without error examines the strategic role of human capital when designing a performance appraisal system. The case review connects: 1) Ethical Dilemmas; 2) Internal/External Influences; 3) Stakeholders; 4) Managerial Roles; and 5) Bias to effective strategic plans.

-Case review accurately surveys the areas of compensation and/or other regulatory procedures and requirements as they relate to the proposed performance appraisal system.

-Case review effectively and persuasively, analyzes, synthesizes and assesses the current performance appraisal system. The assessment (Literature Review) logically leads the reader to the understanding that a new performance appraisal system is required. The proposed performance appraisal system: 1) Examines cooperative relationships / alliances; 2) Synthesizes complex vertical and horizontal cooperative relationships; 3) Effectively addresses budgetary/salary protocols; 4) Differentiates between employee feedback and harsh criticism and how the performance evaluation system may affect morale and/or attrition; and 5) Proposes an ethical solution to current human capital challenges
