Create A Logic Model
All data analysis initiatives should commence with a research question to be addressed that is aligned with a specific business problem. The goal of the analysis is, therefore, to answer the research question and solve the business problem. Prior to data collection, there will likely be some proposed hypotheses that answer the research question. These hypotheses are then supported or not supported, based on the data analysis findings. All stated hypotheses should be linked to the original research question, and they should contain the key variables (indicators and outputs) or phenomena of interest within the language of the hypothesis. If you are testing statistical hypotheses, you will need to determine the threshold for accepting or rejecting your hypotheses (e.g., the alpha level representing your selected Type I error rates such as 0.05, or a pre-determined numerical result). The alpha level, also known as the Type I error rate, is the probability that you have a false-positive result and, thus, rejected the null hypothesis when it was actually true.
One tool that can help you articulate the problem and identify the key performance indicators or outputs that should serve as the focus of your study, as well as any inputs that should be considered, is the logic model. Logic models provide a framework for thinking through the problem and aligning your problem to the specific inputs, outputs, and outcomes that need to be considered in your analysis. Having alignment upfront will ensure that the data you collect and the outcomes that you present in your data report are relevant to the business and actionable. Make sure that your logic model covers the why, the what, and the how.
Assignment: Create a Logic Model
• Why was this particular business problem selected?
o With a focus on the supporting business and/or academic literature
• How do the selected specific inputs align with the outputs and outcomes supported by business and/or academic literature?
• How do the selected specific outputs align with the outcomes supported by business and/or academic literature?
• How do the selected specific outcomes align with the business problem supported by business and/or academic literature?
• Who are the key stakeholders of interest related to the business problem?
